Why use this calculator

Accurate Where Others Are Not

Correct NI — 6%, not 9%
Class 4 NI reduced from 9% to 6% in April 2024. Most calculators still use the old rate, overstating your bill by hundreds of pounds.
Class 2 NI abolished
Mandatory Class 2 NI abolished April 2024. We do not add it — saving up to £192 vs outdated calculators that still charge it.
Platform-specific mileage
Deliveroo = 20p/mile bicycle. Amazon Flex = 45p/mile car. Applied automatically per platform — no manual adjustment needed.
No signup — 100% free
Unlike paid apps charging £35–£65/year. No account, no email, no subscription. Open and calculate instantly on any device.

Self Assessment

Three Things HMRC Requires

1
Register for Self Assessment
Gig earnings over £1,000 in a tax year — register with HMRC as self-employed. Deadline: 5 October 2026 for the 2025/26 year. Late registration causes penalties.
2
Track income and expenses all year
Keep records of every platform payment and business receipt. A simple mileage log and organised receipts can save you hundreds of pounds in tax by reducing your taxable profit.
3
File and pay by 31 January 2027
Submit your tax return online and pay. Set aside the monthly amount from the calculator above into a separate account every time you are paid — no cash-flow stress at deadline.

Common questions

Gig Worker Tax FAQ

Yes. If your gig earnings exceed £1,000 in a tax year you must register with HMRC by 5 October following that year. Late registration results in escalating penalties. Registration is free via gov.uk.
Online filing and payment deadline is 31 January each year. For 2025/26 that is 31 January 2027. Missing the deadline triggers an automatic £100 penalty, rising significantly after 3 and 6 months.
Class 4 NI at 6% on profits between £12,570 and £50,270, and 2% above. Class 2 NI was abolished from 6 April 2024 — it is now voluntary only. Many online calculators still use the old 9% Class 4 rate, significantly overstating what you owe.
Yes. HMRC allows 45p per mile by car for the first 10,000 business miles, 24p by motorbike, and 20p by bicycle. Keep a mileage log with date, destination, purpose, and distance for every trip. You cannot claim mileage and also claim fuel and servicing costs separately.
Your employer taxes your salary via PAYE. Your gig profit is stacked on top and taxed at whatever band it falls into. If your salary already uses your personal allowance, every pound of gig profit is taxed at 20% (or 40% if you cross £50,270). Toggle PAYE in the calculator above to see your exact position.
Rough guide: profit under £12,570 — nothing. £12,570 to £25,000 — around 20–22% per month. £25,000 to £50,000 — around 26–30%. The calculator gives you the exact monthly figure — transfer that to a separate savings account every time a platform pays you.

This calculator provides estimates based on HMRC rates for the 2025/26 tax year. General guidance only — not financial, tax, or legal advice.

Your actual tax liability may differ based on individual circumstances, additional income, pension contributions, and other reliefs. Consult a qualified accountant for personalised advice. Verify rates at gov.uk.
